Sex Addiction
LIke any other kind of addiction, sex addiction is very real and very dangerous.  Many people erronously believe that sex addiction is not a real thing because it being used as an excuse for out of control sexual behavior and not a real disease.  The fact of the matter is that sexual addiction is just as real as drug and alcohol addiction and is not indicative of character flaws or malicious intent.  Read here about sexual addiction, the signs and help for overcoming this disease.

Sexual AddictionSexual addiction, like any other kind of addiction is a disease characterized by dangerous compulsive behvior with little or no regard fro negative consequences.  Sexual addiction is serious problem in our society not only because of the dangers inherent to addiction, but also because of society's overall refusal to understand or accept sexual addiction as a disease. Sexual addiction is a progressive disease that can be treated with proper treatment programs and dedication from the addicts themselves.  Research has found that there are several kinds of sex addictions afflicting society with a broad range from chronic masturbation and serial dating to solicitation of prostitutes and anonymous sex.  There is also a sexual addiction referred to as sexual anorexia, where an individual cannot engage in sexual or intimate relationships due to an intense fear of such interactions.  It has also been found that sex addiction is coupled with mental health disorders more often than not.    Sex addiction is characterized as uncontrollable sexual impulses that drive the core of existence in addicts.  The chemicals released by the brain during sexual activity become so desired by the individual's brain, it leads to sexual addiction when a person is constantly seeking the rush from the chemicals released in their brain during sexual activities.

Who Suffers From Sexual Addiction?

Over 80% of sex addicts report either physical, sexual, or psychological abuse in early childhood years.  Many people who become sexual addicts  grew up in normal homes, but lacked attention or sufficient affection from loved ones, and later in life sought that affection erronously through sexual behaviors.  There are a variety of causes for sexual addiction, but more surprising is the manner in which sexual addiction affects the lives of addicts.  Many sex addicts lead outwardly normal lives, having a spouse, family, stable jobs, and appear to be normal everyday people.  The reality is for many sex addicts, a secret life of sexual behaviors is putting themselves and their loved ones at risk, and gains more and more dangerous potential with each impulsive act.  Sexual addicts are common people and do not stand out with noticeable signs, that may be present in drug or alcohol addiction.  Sexual addicts often feel shame and guilt even moreso than drug or alcohol addicts because sexual addiction is so misunderstood and unacceptable for many people.  For this reason, sexual addicts often have a very hard time admitting to others that they have a problem, making the task of find treatment more difficult from fear of judgement.  The reason sexual addiction is not as common as drug and alcohol addiction is because of the secretive acts of sexual addicts.  Many sex addicts engage in their impulsive activities in manners which are illusive to mainstream society, such as internet pornography, topless bars, solicitation of prostitutes and escorts, and anonymous sex (one night stands).  The disease of sex addiction is one that is progressive with the addict’s selectivity in sexual partners and objects decreasing over time, putting the addict’s personal health more and more at risk.  The very nature of this and any other addiction is the compulsive use or repetition of risky behaviors despite the ever-present and increasing negative consequences.

What Kind of Help is There For Sexual Addicts?

Like gambling addiction, sexual addiction is a treatable disease and there are several rehab centers equipped with the expertise to treat sexual addiction.  While sexual addiction can be efficiently treated in drug rehab centers, it may be a better plan to get treatment for this disease in a rehab specifically designed to treat sexual addiction, gambling addiction, internet and gaming addiction.  Even though the goal and message of treatment for all addictions is essentially the same, sexual addiction usually comes with early childhood trauma and could be coupled with co-occurring mental health issues that need to be addressed.  In sexual addiction rehab, addicts learn about the nature of their disease and learn the tools neccessary for a healthy and compulsive free life after rehab.  More importantly, sexual addicts learn that their disease is not their fault and it's not something for them to be ashamed of.  Sexual addiction rehab differs from drug rehab and other specific rehabs in the sense that they will place more focus on accepting sexual addiction as a disease and not a character flaw or indicator of the addict being a bad person or even a sexual predator.  Because sexual addiction is so misunderstood and badly judged by the majority of the public, sexual addicts are often ostracized from family, society, and job settings.  This kind of treatment leads to severe feelings of shame and guilt over a situation that is truly not under the addict's control.  When sexual addicts enter rehab, they find themselves in a safer, compassionate, and understanding environment where they will not be judged and can receive the help they need to lead healty and compulsive free lives.
