Drug RehabilitationDrug rehabilitation is the key component to finding and maintaining sobriety from a life of drug and alcohol addiction. Drug rehabilitation is the process of both physical and mental/emotional healing and restructuring from the familiarities of drug and alcohol addiction. Drug rehabilitation can come in many different forms, and with many different approaches to success, but the base outline is to heal and also restructure the whole person, both body and mind, for a sober and healthy life.Physical Drug RehabilitationThe physical part of drug rehabilitation is a two part process. First, the body must heal from abuse brought on by drug and alcohol addiction. Drugs and alcohol are poisonous and toxic to the human body and the reversal of the damage done is often long and complicated, if it can be fully achieved. In many cases of drug and alcohol rehabilitation, some or all physical damage to the body is permanent and cannot be reversed. When a person enters into the drug rehabilitation process, is it very similar to physical rehabilitation that may take place after major surgery or the placement of a prosthetic limb. An individual must first heal from the original procedure. In an addicts' case, the procedure would be the physical removal of drugs and alcohol from the body, also known as detoxification or detox. This can sometimes be a jarring and uncomfortable process, depending on the drugs to which the individual is addicted. Often, the detox part of drug rehabilitation can require full time medical attention to ensure safety and as much comfort as possible. After the detoxification portion of drug rehabilitation has been completed, the time for restructuring begins. The restructuring portion of drug rehabilitation is the process that teaches the addict a new way to live without the drugs and alcohol in their lives. Although the concept may seem to be rather simple, for addicts, especially those who have been addicted to drugs and alcohol for a long time or who have more severe addictions, learning to live without the drug and alcohol rituals that made up their everyday lives can be like learning to write with the non-dominant hand. The process of unlearning certain physical activities associated with drug or alcohol abuse is the goal of the physical side of any drug rehabilitation process. Mental and Emotional Drug RehabilitationDrug rehabilitation can be a complicated process, but the most enduring and important part of rehabilitation is the mental and emotional side of it. Nine times of ten, drug and alcohol addiction are a symptom of other problems that stem from emotional issues of all kinds such as abandonment issues, self esteem issues, physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. A plethora of emotional problems have been blamed for drug and alcohol addiction. Drug rehabilitation is designed to get to the bottom of emotional issues that may have caused or contributed to the addiction itself. Just like with physical drug rehabilitation, emotional drug rehabilitation consists of healing and restructuring the way an addict thinks and processes emotions. The healing part of emotional drug rehabilitation can be amazingly in depth and complicated, depending on the specific kind of emotional problems an individual may have. Sometimes, this part of drug rehabilitation can take a little as a few weeks or it can be a gradual progress over several years with the continuous assistance of a mental health professional. Getting through emotional baggage is key in any drug rehabilitation process and regardless of the time it takes to actually get through it, as long as a clear path has been revealed, the rehabilitation can really begin. |
